Me Yves Joli-Cœur is a lawyer at Dunton Rainville. His expertise is focused on real estate law, particularly co-ownership law for which he is considered a pioneer in Québec. He is also an accredited mediator and arbitrator of the Barreau du Québec.In 2009, he received the honorary distinction of Advocatus Emeritus (Ad. E.) (in French only) for his great contribution to both the legal profession and co-ownership law.
Me Joli-Cœur advises and represents several co-owners and syndicates of co-owners in defending their rights. He is one of the few lawyers in Québec who has contributed the most to the discussion about co-ownership law. Furthermore, he has dealt with various decision makers to steer the future legal framework of co-ownership law.
For instance, in 2002, he has played a key role in bringing about a legislative amendment which modified the chapter of the Civil Code of Québec on co-ownership. In 2012, he was appointed a member of the Co-Ownership Advisory Committee, which was put together by the Chambre des notaires du Québec with the collaboration of the Minister of Justice. The Committee’s Report, which was released in November 2012, was the basis for the legislative amendments to co-ownership that were confirmed in Bill 141 in 2018 and Bill 16 in 2019.
Me Joli-Cœur is a founder of the Regroupement des gestionnaires et copropriétaires du Québec (RGCQ), a non-profit organization created in 1999. The RGCQ’s mission is to promote the sound management of the syndicates of co-owners by establishing strict standards with regard to the upkeep of the buildings and the maintenance of the co-owners’ capital value. Me Joli-Cœur also organizes symposiums and makes publications available to members. In addition, he provides them with specialized support and consulting services.
Me Joli-Cœur has developed the website CondoLegal.com, Québec’s reference in condominium law. Furthermore, through the RGCQ, he has been for the last 25 years a contributor of various articles published in the newsletter Condoliaison, which focuses on current events in the area of co-ownership.
